Male Breast Reduction – Post Surgery Instructions and Maintenance

Gynecomastia is another term for male breast reduction surgery. Post Operative Course

After the operation, the man may have to stay overnight at the clinic or hospital, depending on the extent of the operation. A compression bandage should be worn by the patient to help support the wound as well as facilitate better healing. Medication to fight possible infections due to the open wound and to control inflammation and swelling should be prescribed by the attending surgeon or doctor. The application of a drain may be used by the doctor to help facilitate drainage of excess fluids. It is important to take all of the prescribed antibacterial medication to eliminate any possibility of an infection and complications.

Overall, a general feeling of exhaustion and some degree of pain in the area and around it is to be expected. One cannot sleep on his stomach until several weeks after the operation. The patient is also advised from lifting heavy objects or exerting much effort to push or pull things. Basically, upper body movement and exertion should be kept in check to be sure that both internal and external wound will heal well. Bruising and swelling may disappear as early as three weeks up to a little over a month.

The patient will also be taught how to change his wound dressing if he is deemed fit to be discharged already. A follow up visit to the doctor is mandatory so he (the doctor) will be able to monitor the healing process as well as the end result of the breast reduction procedure.

I can only tell you what I know from a friend of mine who had a reduction…you’ll only know once you try. Its not so much a nipple sensitivity issue as it is the milk glands and ducts and how they were effected by the surgery. She’s currently pregnant and plans to try to breastfeed. She might not be able to, or might not be able to produce enough milk. The doctor told her she’ll just have to wait and see.

It was really cool. Out of all the surgeries I had, not much pain at all. The doctor did the “key-hole” technique where they cut down and around the nipple, remove the excess tissue, then lift everything up and close. It was an almost 6 hr surgery and he removed 9 lbs. I woke up with an IV, a PCA (pain control pump) and a catheter. I had 2 drains, which he took out before I was discharged. It sounds very technical, but it was not bad. I had to stay wrapped with the ace wrap for over 6 weeks. I went back to work on the 3rd week. I felt great. And, after suffering with large, saggy breasts my whole life ( the final size was a 54i before surgery) i was very pleased to be a perky 48B. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. Hi. I have a question to all the women who had breast reductions. I did alot of reading on the net and alot of things worry me. First off, I am 100% sure I need a reduction. I wear a 40F. My main concern is what I read about breasts being so large that the surgeon has to remove your areola which causes loss of feeling and inability to breast feed. How common is this? I know every woman is different but I would really appreciate hearing about it from women who actually went through it and how well did it go. Thank ya’ll!

A talented surgeon can reattach the aerola with minimal loss of sensation, but it’s always a concern.

After losing 198 lb in 1 year (plus 3 pregnancies) my stretch marks left considerable sagging in my tummy & bosom and my HMO paid for reconstructive surgery.

The surgeon used a new breast reduction/lift technique that didn’t involve the usual t-scar (lollipop). Ask your doctors about it.

BTW, losing weight slowly doesn’t help saggy skin if you have stretch marks. Stretch marks are emergency skin and never go away.
