Answer Snippet
When is muscle repair needed?
Muscle repair
Apr 20, 2017
Congratulations on your weight loss journey! The need for muscle repair will be at the surgeon's discretion at the time of surgery. Although you have not had any children, you may still have had some separation of your tummy muscles. There is subcutaneous fat beneath the skin (which you have most definitely lost with your weight loss) and many people also have a component of intrabdominal fat (which is harder to lose). Intrabdominal fat is found beneath the tummy muscles...
Does this look infected? 5 weeks post-op.
Stitch?
Apr 20, 2017
I would recommend you call your PS and inform them. It should heal just fine with some antibiotic ointment and a bandage with daily dressing changes. Depending on what type of suture and closure technique your surgeon used, this could be a stitch abscess. Some suture material is absorbable but can occasionally come to the surface before dissolving. This can cause a small pimple like area and can continue to fester until the suture material dissolves or your surgeon removes it. Removal is...
Recovery time for an arm lift vs extended arm lift: not sure what I need so I am asking for both.
Time off work
Apr 20, 2017
We recommend patients take 2 to 6 weeks off work when recovering from an arm lift (brachioplasty). No lifting more than 10 lbs and no raising arms above shoulders for 2 weeks after surgery. Also, no activity that will raise your blood pressure for the first two weeks. You could go to work at 2 weeks with light duty for an additional 2 weeks (total of 4 weeks with lifting restrictions) if necessary. Another thing to factor in is if you are attempting to keep your procedure private. You...
Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck? I'm Done Having Kids and Recently Lost 35 lbs.
Tummy tuck in your future
Jan 26, 2016
You appear to be an excellent candidate for a tummy tuck. One thing to consider and unable to comment on is whether or not you would also benefit from flank liposuction or a lower body lift to more aggressively contour your waist, hips and buttocks. These are questions that can best be addressed by your board certified plastic surgeon. Be aware that if the surgeon you consult with does not do lower body lifts, they may not recommend one. You are on a good site to get...
Is lump on hip swelling or fat? No improvement in 4 weeks.
residual fat vs swelling
Jan 26, 2016
While photos help demonstrate what is bothering you, there is no comparison to an actual exam. It may not appear to have changed in 4 weeks to you but does appear to have improved from your 2 photographs. At this point, it really could be either. Some clues to its cause would come from closer exam. Firm possible fat necrosis versus edema. Compresses with finger pressure...edema, improves with wearing your garment....edema. If the area is soft and pliable,...
what type of needle recommend to deflate saline implants... 18g?16g?20g?21g?
Not a good idea
Jan 26, 2016
Whatever you are trying to achieve, it won't work. Even if your goal is to just have all of the volume gone (which is what will happen--imagine popping a balloon with any size needle), you will not like the feel of a ruptured implant. The folds are irritating. Best case scenario.....loss of entire volume, uncomfortable implant shell remnant...Worst case scenario....pneumothorax (air introduced around your lung) and death. See your plastic surgeon.
Is there a way for me to track down my breast implant information?
Implant info
Jan 26, 2016
I would start with the facility where you had your procedure done. Allergan and Mentor are the 2 main implant companies, Sientra is the third. You can contact their customer support and see if they have your name on file. If your surgeon or facility filled out the paperwork that they are supposed to, the implant manufacturers will have you on file.
Could I be healing at a fast rate or are they going to be too low by the the time they've completely h
Dear Happy
Jan 26, 2016
Congrats on your recent aug! You sound happy, don't overthink it! The amount of change that you hear about has to do with the amount of stretch that your tissue is under as well as your native breast tissue. In this case, a 300cc implant and an adequate pocket may give you an excellent result on your first postoperative day. It is likely that they will only look better and better. Hopefully your doctor has asked for at least a 2 month post op visit so that...
How long will it take for the tape to come off after a latissimus flap reconstruction?
tape application
Jan 15, 2016
I would defer to your plastic surgeon. This is a routine dressing care question. I would recommend my patients to go ahead and remove the tape, shower, dry the skin and apply paper tape. It looks like you are on your way to a great result!
Any suggestions to Tummy tuck scar?
Scar improvement options
Jan 13, 2016
Without seeing your scar it is difficult to recommend anything specific but in general, I usually have my post operative patients apply paper tape to their incision line for 2 months after surgery. In my experience it helps scars look better faster but in the long run (at 2 years) you cannot tell the difference between scars treated with anything versus scars that heal on their own. There are so many scar treatments and gels out there that if any of them truly worked, they...
I'm 33 years old and had 420cc smooth, round, saline implants inserted under the muscle in 2005 Consid
removal of saline implants
Jan 13, 2016
I would recommend removal of your implants once you have finished breast feeding unless there is an urgent reason you want them removed. Otherwise they can be taken out whenever you want. If your surgeon makes a new smaller incision (1/4 to 1/2 an inch) at the bottom of your breast your recovery would be extremly simple and straight forward. Reopening your old periareolar scar would require a bit more dissection. You may want to wait until you are finished having...
I need my natural breasts tidied up. Any suggestions?
reduction vs reduction with implants
Jan 13, 2016
The difference between the two is that the addition of an implant would give you upper pole fullness. A reduction alone is simpler and likely to be covered by your insurance, without the need to worry about implants.
JP drain numbers still high after 7 weeks. Breast revision and scar tissue removal
High drain output
Jan 12, 2016
This is a difficult situation indeed. Do you have implants in place and when you say "scar tissue removal" what exactly do you mean? A drain in place next to an implant for 7 weeks is an extremely worrisome situation with regards to infection. At this point, you may have to "bite the bullet" and remove the drain, discontinue the vancomycin and see what happens. In my experience, antibiotics will not "cure" an infection but may keep things from getting worse but...
Breast pain ten years after Augmentation with burning sensation. Any suggestions?
Pain with TRAM and implant
Jan 12, 2016
I think you will get some more concrete answers with an actual physical exam but in the meantime, from your very brief history, you are very likely to have some chronic issues with pain and discomfort. If you have "always had discomfort from your implant" but it is saline then at least you don't have to worry if the implant is ruptured---you would go flat and notice its deflation. If the implant is small, you may be able to tolerate its removal with volume replacement from either...
Poor cosmetic result of DIEP flap scar revision. How can it be corrected?
Diep scar revision
Jan 12, 2016
:) You really will need to post some pictures but I am disheartened that your surgeon is not able to give you a satisfactory explanation. It may be difficult but I would try and get an in person consultation with another plastic surgeon for a second opinion. Nobody likes to fix another persons results, but they may help explain some things in a different manner so that you can decide if you want your primary surgeon to proceed with revision surgery or not. Plastic surgery is more...
