He then pursued further training and completed a second full residency in plastic & reconstructive surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). This was followed by a fellowship in advanced reconstructive and microvascular surgery at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at New York University (NYU).

Dr. Tanna currently serves as Vice President of women’s surgical services at the Katz Women’s Surgical Center. In 2018, Dr. Tanna was promoted to the rank of Professor of Surgery with the Zucker School of Medicine, making him one of the youngest full professors at Northwell Health. In addition, he is a full investigator in the Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. He is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Aesthetic Society, and the American College of Surgeons.

Direct-to-implant (DTI) reconstruction is a single-stage reconstruction that directly inserts the implant at the time of the mastectomy. Women who are ideal candidates for this option do not require tissue expansion because the size of the soft pocket at the time of mastectomy is healthy and safe enough to fit the final implant. While a tissue expander is not required with this technique, the use of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) is often required to help hold the implant in place.

The key with a tissue expander is proper placement. The goal is to expand the lower pole to create a nice arc. If the expander is superiorly malpositioned it can cause constriction of the lower pole. This is hard to fix at the implant exchange. Unfortunately, its hard to non-surgically move expanders once they are placed.
