Accessory (extra) Nipple Removal – Plastic Surgeons Opinions
The condition of extra nipples is really common. Most patients think the extra nipples are moles.
They can occur anywhere along the “milk line” which extends from the underarm area, down through the normal nipples and then down to the groin.
I had a med school class mate that a nearly complete “milk line”. He was very proud of his mammal status!
Removing this accessory nipples is easy to do and the scar from removal is usually less obvious than the extra nipple.
This can be done with local anesthesia with very little “down time”. Insurance does not pay for this nor should they. It is a cosmetic, not a functional problem. (Lisa Lynn Sowder, MD, Seattle Plastic Surgeon)
These are treated similar to moles with simple excision as the definitive correction. I would not use wart remover as this could potentially cause more scarring and will not remove the accessory nipple. (Otto Joseph Placik, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)
Accessory nipples are very easy to remove and the scar will almost always be less visible than the nipples were.
Please don’t use wart remover, that sounds barbaric! Go to a plastic surgeon for the best result. (Richard P. Rand, MD, FACS, Seattle Plastic Surgeon)
I’m not sure if your insurance would cover removal of accesory nipples but it most certainly can be done. You would need to be seen and evaluated by a plastic surgeon to review your options and you could see wher your resulting scars would be and what they may look like.
I do not recommend trying any over the counter medications or potions (Michael C. Edwards, MD, FACS, Las Vegas Plastic Surgeon)
Treatment for Extra Nipples
Having extra nipples is not unusual. The extra nipples can occur anywhere along the milk lines which start at your armpits and curve down toward the abdomen. The treatment for this condition is to simply remove the extra nipple.
It is a very minor surgery that can be done under local anesthesia. Home remedies do not work, and I do not advise using wart medication. (T.Y. Steven Ip, MD, FACS, New York Plastic Surgeon)
Surgical excision by a plastic surgeon is the appropriate treatment for the removal of extra nipples. (David Stoker, MD, Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon)
Redundant nipples
Having redundant nipples is very common; just under the breast and in the axilla in particular. The surgery is typically straightforward and can be done under local anaesthetic. You will have a small scar but that should fade away with time.
Do NOT use a topical treatment. You will not get the result you want and the surgery to correct it will costs more and not look as nice as if you had it done properly from the outset.
This is your body, it is worth it. (Rodger Shortt, FRCSC, Toronto Plastic Surgeon)
