Breast Reduction In Older Patients
Age is chronologic (a number) and not physiologic (the state of your health). I do breast reduction surgery on many women in their 60’s and 70’s who are in otherwise good health and cleared by their medical doctor.
Breast reduction has the highest satisfaction rate amongst plastic surgery patients as it is a combination of cosmetic to improve their appearance as well as reconstructive, to improve back pain, neck pain and bra strap grooving.
They also find it much more enjoyable to be active and exercise without pain or embarrassment. By all means full speed ahead provided you are cleared by your internist. (Steven Schuster, MD, FACS, Boca Raton Plastic Surgeon)
There really is no specific age limitation on a breast reduction. If you are unhappy that they are too big or they are too heavy, then certainly getting a breast reduction is reasonable. (Steven Wallach, MD, New York Plastic Surgeon)
Visit with several board-certified plastic surgeons to determine your suitability for the procedure. (Earl Stephenson, Jr., MD, DDS, FACS, Atlanta Plastic Surgeon)
Breast reduction surgery has held up for more than 50 years for patients as one of the most gratifying surgical procedures. I routinely perform this procedure in patients really of all ages. I have performed breast reduction many time in patients in their 50s and 60s and they all seem to do very well. (James F. Boynton, MD, FACS, Houston Plastic Surgeon)
Breast reduction is a great operation for more mature adults
Some of my happiest patients are those who have had breast reduction, especially those that are a little older. As we age our joints and bodies age and the symptoms of neck, back and breast pain often increase. With a reduction mammoplasty it is often possible to minimize these complaints. Not to mention that it is always nice to have a youthful perky breast. My oldest patient who under went reduction mammoplasty was 86.
She did great and was extremely happy. Just make sure you find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and view some of their before and after pictures. (Carl W. “Rick” Lentz III, MD, Orlando Plastic Surgeon)
If you are healthy age 60 or 70 is not too old for a breast reduction. I have done many older than you but you should clear this with your doctors. You should also know that depending on the size of your breasts you might not be a candidate for insurance coverage. (Richard P. Rand, MD, FACS, Seattle Plastic Surgeon)
Age limit for breast reduction
In my Santa Rosa, California plastic surgery practice the oldest breast reduction patient we have had was 72 years old. What matters is how healthy a person is and how well they can withstand to undergo a procedure under anesthesia.
If there are any doubts have your primary physician evaluate you from a cardiovascular and lung standpoint and share with him/her that you want to have a breast reduction. Breast reduction patients find immediate gratification and relief of the weight on their shoulders. (Francisco Canales, MD, Santa Rosa Plastic Surgeon)Breast Reduction Surgery in Women OVER 60 years of Age
All surgery is based on an analysis of potential benefit as outweighed by potential risk. In our society, chronological age is no longer indicative of your physiological age. Older people are healthier than ever and their age is no longer a de facto contraindication to surgery.
If you are perfectly healthy and after a thorough examination are cleared for surgery by a cardiologist, there is NO reason why you should not be able to safely have a Breast Reduction and enjoy its results. (Peter A. Aldea, MD, Memphis Plastic Surgeon)
