Is it wise to save money and fly to Miami for a breast augmentation if I live in Connecticut?
Probably better to “shop local”
Dec 11, 2017
Breast augmentation is a very popular procedure and patient satisfaction rates tend by quite high.  I can see why some patients might be tempted to select the surgeon with competitive prices.  It is hard to wait and be patient.  Still, I think it is best to find someone near you, or at least in driving distance.  I typically see my patients back for a number of follow up visits even if everything goes perfectly.  If you were were to have a complication, the proper management might be chall…
What can be done about these horrible looking “dog ears” I’ve been left with?
Dog Ears after a tummy tuck
Aug 28, 2014
One of the more common complications after an abdominoplasty is having problems with the appearance of the scar. This can be in the form of a wide, hypertrophic appearing scar, or it can be what is referred to as “dog ears.” These are small, raised areas of excess skin at the very lateral ends of the tummy tuck scar. When dog ears are a problem, I typically remove them in the office under local anesthesia only. The recovery is typically pretty rapid. Most…
Are my tummy tuck results normal for six months post op?
Tummy tuck results normal?
Aug 25, 2014
It is always challenging to evaluate post-operative photos without seeing pre-operative ones as well. From the photo you submitted, it looks like you may still have a rectus diastasis. Pregnancy can cause a dramatic weakening and stretching out of the fascia (connective tissue) in between and overlying the rectus abdominis muscles. Most plastic surgeons experienced with abdominoplasty, consider repair of the diastasis to be a vital part of the procedure. You should…

Early asymmetry after tummy tuck
Aug 25, 2014
It can take up to three months for the swelling to subside after an abdominoplasty. Sometimes even longer. However, swelling tends to be relatively symmetric. If one side of your abdomen is noticeably larger than the other, it might be a sign of a persistent seroma. Small seromas are quite common, and typically resolve on their own without any treatment apart from compression. Larger or persistent seromas require aspiration in the office. Infrequently, it…
5 weeks post op. Will my TT tighten up more? There is a lot of saggy/excess skin. Is this norma
It is still a bit early to draw any conclusions
Aug 8, 2014
Well, five weeks after surgery is still pretty early to draw conclusions about your result. I think it takes at least 4-6 weeks for all of the swelling to go away after an abdominoplasty, and sometimes up to a year to get completely back to normal. If liposuction of the abdominal tissue was performed during the procedure, you might expect some skin retraction during the coming months. If not, I think it is unlikely the skin is going to drastically change in the future…
Purple wire like string from below incision?
Looks like suture material
Aug 6, 2014
From the photos, it likes you are dealing with an exposed stitch, a.k.a. suture material. Plastic surgeons use a wide variety of dissolvable and permanent sutures. This could be either. Regardless, it can be taken care of in a matter of seconds by your plastic surgeon. The exposed portion will be grasped and then trimmed at or just below the level of the skin.
What would be the recommended method of Breast Reconstruction for a patient who received radiat
An autologous/flap reconstruction is your only good option
Aug 6, 2014
Radiation is a vital part of breast cancer treatment. It has been shown to increase survival and decrease local recurrence of breast cancer. Still, it can complicate one’s situation when it comes to breast reconstruction options. In someone like yourself who apparently underwent immediate reconstruction with an expander, and had complications from the radiation, your only good option is to your use your own tissues in the form of a flap. There are a number of flap…
if I get breast implants do I have to get them redone again in ten years?
Do breast implants have to be replaced in the future?
Jun 2, 2014
Frankly, it is hard to know how long a patient’s breast implants will last. I tell all my patients that they are a man-made product, and that the implants do not last forever. We hope that the implants will last a minimum of 10 to 15 years. Therefore, young patients should plan on having the implants replaced at least once. However, there is not absolute time frame where the implants have to replaced. I presume that most plastic surgeons see patients who have…
When will I see a final result on my rhinoplasty?
How long before you can see the final result after a rhinoplasty?
Jun 2, 2014
Rhinoplasty is a common cosmetic procedure in the United States. The ASPS estimates the more than 220,000 were done in 2013. Patients typically have very high expectations. In my experience, it is normal form them to be anxious to know the final outcome. Unfortunately, it can take awhile when it comes to rhinoplasty surgery. First, there can be a fair amount of bruising and swelling after the operation. Although the bruising usually resolves in a week or…
Is it recommended to wear a girdle / compression garment when doing weight lifting or ab work o
Compression Garments after a Tummy Tuck
May 29, 2014
Most plastic surgeons have their tummy tuck patients wear some sort of compression garment after surgery. I prefer the soft, elastic variety with plenty of cushion. I usually have my patients wear a garment for a minimum of six weeks. I think it helps with swelling, the prevention of seromas, and provides added support while the deeper, fascial layers continue to heal. If a patient develops a persistent seroma, I might make them wear the garment even longer. At…
Lost 20lb, hope to lose another 25lb. Am I a good candidate for a TT?
Weight loss prior to tummy tuck surgery
May 6, 2014
I am glad to hear that you’ve been able to lose 20 lbs. Losing excess weight after three kids is tough. More important though than the number of pounds would be your current weight in relation to your height. We use a number called the BMI (body mass index) which takes into account these two measurements. Most patients with a BMI greater than 30 are not good candidates for a tummy tuck, and in fact, they are at an increased risk of serious complications. My…
I weigh about 114 and have a gynecomastia. I don’t want surgery. Are there any other options? (
Treatment of gynecomastia
May 6, 2014
Currently, the only effective treatment option for gynecomastia is surgery. The type of surgery depends on the severity of the problem. Some men have firm, fibrous tissue, while others have breasts which are mostly fatty. Rarely, patients with mostly excess fat can be treated with liposuction alone. More commonly, a combination of liposuction and an open procedure to remove the excess breast tissue is required.
Which incision should be used to correct asymmetry? Under the armpit or in the crease under the
Incision choice to correct breast asymmetry
May 6, 2014
Sounds like you have a pretty dramatic amount of asymmetry. It is challenging to say for certain which incision would be preferable without doing an exam. However, in my hands, I think a more predictable result would be obtained with an incision on the breast. In most cases this would be an incision placed in the inframammary crease. Still, a periareolar incision would be another option. It depends on whether or not there is ptosis (droopiness), and the size of…
How long after breast reduction will I be able to play rugby?
Recovery after breast reduction
May 6, 2014
Breast reduction surgery is common in the United States with a bit more 100,000 procedures done every year. Most are performed on an outpatient basis. Typically, patients require pain medicine for 5-7 days after surgery. Most patients will return to work or school by a week. I usually have patients wait at least two weeks before letting them increase their activity level. At three to four weeks, I let me patients start exercising if they are otherwise healing as…
I am 34 years old and after 3 kids via c-section I am 270 pounds: tummy tuck or a panniculectom
Neither procedure would be good idea right now
May 5, 2014
A tummy tuck would not be indicated because of your height and weight, and the result would most likely be unsatisfactory. A panniculectomy could be an option if you are suffering from persistent rashes and problems with hygiene. However, this is not a cosmetic procedure, and will mostly serve to help you from a functional standpoint only. Currently, your body mass index (BMI) is 41. Studies have shown an increase in complications for patients with a BMI > 30. …
