Difference Between Fractional and CO2 Lasers?
Fractional and CO2 lasers
Jan 7, 2012
To answer your first question – yes, a fractional non-ablative laser is different than a CO2 ablative laser?

First lets define our terms:

"Fractional" simply means that instead of a solid beam, the laser creates a grid-like pattern (as if you were shining a flashlight through black paper with pinholes in it).

"Ablative" means that tissue is destroyed. "Non-ablative" means that the tissue is just heated up. An ablative laser…

What’s the Best Acne Treatment?
Best Acne Treatment
Jul 19, 2011
The best acne treatment is different for each person. It depends on what kind of acne you have (inflammatory vs. blackheads vs. both) and how bad it is (mild vs. severe). It also depends on your skin type, what you have tried before, and many other factors.

As far as laser treatments being the "best" acne treatments – I would disagree. I use laser to treat acne, but I use it as second-line treatment. It works as well as pills and creams but is much…

Restylane Vs Juvederm
Restylane and Juvederm are very similar.
Jul 18, 2011
The difference between Restylane and Juvederm is minimal. I have used both extensively and find that for the most part they are the same. They are both in fact hyaluronic acid. Juvederm is a little more concentrated with 24mg/ml of hyaluronic acid, while Restlyane has 20mg/ml of hyaluronic acid. But Restlyane gives you more in the syringe (1mL vs. 0.8mL).

Juvederm is a little bit "smoother", but if you put them both in the same syringe with the…

Fraxel Vs Photodynamic Therapy: Which is Better for Acne or Acne Scars?
PDT vs. Fraxel for Acne and Acne Scars
Jul 9, 2011
Photodynamic Therapy (or PDT) is mostly aimed at active inflammatory acne. While the Fraxel is mostly aimed at acne scars.

But just to be clear: "Scars" are the indentations left by acne. "Blemishes" are the red marks left by acne. Some patients call all of this "scarring". PDT may help with some of the redness and "blemishes" left by acne, but will do little to address the indented "scars" of…

Glycolic Vs. Salicylic Acid – Which Peel is Better for Acne?
Salicylic Acid is Probably a Bit More Effective for Acne
Jul 9, 2011
Both glycolic acid peels and salicylic acid peels are helpful when part of an overall treatment plan for acne. Salicylic acid has been shown to be somewhat superoir for treating acne, probably because it is "lipophilic". In other words it can penetrate the "grease" that is clogging your "pores" and causing the acne.

One peel by itself is not very effective (just like going to the gym one time is not very effective). Peeling must…

Will Acne Return if I Stop Taking Accutane?
Acne is Tamed by Accutane
Jul 9, 2011
I get respone rates close to 100% with Accutane. By that I mean, that almost every patient is clear by the time they finish 6 months of Accutane. And in most cases, the acne does not come back. That does not mean you will never get another pimple for your entire life. But most patients never go back to the severe acne that they had prior to treatment.

Who is at most at risk for their acne to recur after Accutane?

Younger patients (16 years old and…

Is Accutane Usually Covered by Insurance?
Accutane is Usually Covered by Insurance
Jul 9, 2011
I have had surprisingly few insurance problems with patients on Accutane. Most insurances seem to cover the treatment. A few HMO's require a few forms to be filled out. One HMO limits the course of treatment to 5 months for some reason.

If you have to pay out of pocket, our local pharmacies charge about $240 for 30 pills of the 20mg or 40mg dose. Target and Walmart pharmacy where always the cheapest, but even Walgreen's has recently lowered their price.
