Do I have gigantomastia?
Therapeutic reduction mammaplasty
Nov 24, 2020
Your breasts are too large for your body. There are many different terms, but we breast specialists see enough overly large breasts to know yours probably cause you neck, shoulder and back pain and interfere with your quality of life. Insurance can most times cover the procedure to reduce the size of your breasts while lifting them and bringing them into better proportion with the rest of your body while also alleviating the symptoms you most likely have. Consulting with a board-certified...
Who can exactly have a tummy tuck?
Who can have a tummy tuck?
Oct 27, 2017
The answer is someone with lax excess abdominal skin. If a patient has great skin strength that will help it contract, and if that patient only has a moderate amount of extra fat, I recommend liposuction. If a patient has loose skin and/or a diastasis recti, I recommend and abdominoplasty. A BMI under 32 is optimal. Ultimately, a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon is the only way to ascertain what course will get you the results you're after. Best of...

Would tummy tuck be a good choice before my goal weight of 140? I am 5'4" and 148 lbs
Oct 11, 2017
If 140lbs is still a possibility for you, weight loss is always advisable prior to major body contouring surgery. That said, if you stall out at 148lbs and this is it for you, you would be a great candidate for abdominoplasty given that you are already fit and at a reasonable weight. Best to be evaluated by a board certified plastic surgeon to assess the quality of your skin, etc.
Would breast reduction be advisable at age 70?
Would breast reduction be advisable at age 70?
Oct 11, 2017
If a patient is healthy and cleared for a three-hour surgery, age is generally not a reason not to operate. You want a very drastic change, which is probably borne of frustration with lugging around all that extra weight and the pain it causes. Best to meet with a board certified plastic surgeon to assess your goals. Best of luck!

Am I a candidate for liposuction? My BMI is 35.3 and I am looking to contour my midsection
Oct 11, 2017
I generally save body contouring for when a patient has a BMI of under 32 and is at a stable, happy weight - eating healthy food and working out regularly. Body contouring surgery - probably a combination of liposuction and abdominoplasty - may very well be in your future, but your results will be much better if you lost 15-20lbs. As well, you have abdominal striae (stretch marks) that could be the result of rapid weight gain or because of a hormonal issue. A full...

Am I a candidate for Liposuction or Tummy Tuck or both?
Oct 11, 2017
I hear the same frustration from a number of patients: they try treatments and workouts but don't seem to see a difference in the way their body looks. There is a saying that "Abs are made in the kitchen." I have found that to be true myself: 90% of how you look is determined by what you put in your mouth. I generally save body contouring for when a patient has a BMI of under 32 and is at a stable, happy weight - eating healthy food and working out regularly. I resist...

I'm 5'3", 240 lbs. Doctor suggested sleeve but I want to know if CoolSculpting will work before I try any type of surgery?
Oct 11, 2017
CoolSculpting is a great tool for spot fat reduction in the right candidate. You are not a candidate for CoolSculpting - please save your money. It will "work" in that, technically, it will kill some fat cells, but the overall effect in someone with your BMI would be negligible. Best to get to a healthy weight via whatever method you and your doctors decide, and save the CoolScupting for final contouring. Congratulations on taking steps to get healthy, and best of...
Should I not get a breast augmentation due to my wide set breasts?
Should I not get a breast augmentation due to my wide set breasts?
Oct 11, 2017
Hi - your breasts are constricted, meaning there's a lot more going on rather than their just appearing small. Best to find photos that look how you want to look and bring them to a board certified surgeon. It's important for them to see what you envision so they can explain whether that's even possible given your anatomy, and then construct a plan to get you as close to that as possible. Best of luck to you!
Do I need a lift, or will I have good results with just implants?
Do I need a lift, or will I have good results with just implants?
Oct 11, 2017
You do have a slightly tuberous look to your breasts: larger areolae, constricted lower pole, but whether that can be corrected to your satisfaction with only an implant is difficult to say from a photograph. The bottom line is you need to be examined by a board certified surgeon. You haven't explicitly stated your goals (does the size of your areola bother you? are you aware your breasts are different sizes?) - a good surgeon will listen to your goals and concerns and try to reconcile...

Would I need a full tummy tuck if I want the fat gone, look more toned, and be rid of tummy hanging over?
Oct 10, 2017
It's hard to judge from just the one photo. You are also technically overweight, although not out of the range that would make you a candidate for body contouring. That is to say, I always recommend patients get in as good a shape as is *reasonable* for them to maintain long term. That is not "starvation diet" shape, but eating healthily, working out, and living a happy life shape. That not only improves the good results post surgery, it increases the durability...

I am 18 years old and I want breast reduction but not sure if my doctor would approve?
Oct 10, 2017
Criteria for breast reduction are based mostly on your symptoms: back and neck pain, bra strap grooving, inability to exercise due to breast size. As to how much breast tissue must be removed for insurance to cover it, that is specific to different carriers but in general follows the Schnur scale. The Schnur scale takes into account a patient's body surface area and correlates how many grams would be reasonable to be removed. As to whether your "doctor would approve," I'm...

Liposuction is really never covered by insurance
Oct 5, 2017
Hi!
I appreciate your wanting to improve your appearance and doing the research to find out what it takes. Pretty much all your questions need to be answered in person by a board certified plastic surgeon; however, I can tell you that cosmetic liposuction (not performed for lymphedema or other medical condition) is never covered by insurance. Eating a clean diet - one free from added sugar, wheat, dairy and alcohol - is pretty much imperative to get you to your best shape....

What procedure do I need to get to flatten my stomach?
Oct 5, 2017
Hi Savanna,
You appear to be a very young woman. It would help to know more about your history including your age. Generally, for younger people like you who have excess weight they can't shift, I recommend a deep examination of what they eat by someone with training in food sensitivities. Wheat, dairy and excess sugar can trigger your system in ways beyond the simple math of calories. Excess weight can be your body's telling you something is off, and plastic surgery is not...

Planning on getting a liposuction want to enhance breasts at the same time, would implants or fat transfer be my best choice?
Oct 5, 2017
Hi Nichole,
The answer to your question depends on the degree of enhancement you're after. Before that, however, I would note that your breasts are very different from one another. I would focus on improving your breast symmetry with a breast lift at the time of any augmentation procedure in order to improve their overall appearance. That said, fat transfer generally has a very modest effect each round - usually less than a cup size. The risks and benefits of all...

Will lipo be a good option to get rid of my abdominal fat w/o causing my stomach to sag or will I just be wasting money?
Oct 5, 2017
Hi and thanks for your question - it's hard to say without examining you and inspecting the quality of your skin. You don't want to trade "pudgy belly" for "saggy belly," but you always have the option of doing a tummy tuck if you don't like the results of liposuction after your skin has had the chance to contract as much as it can. Ultimately, a board certified plastic surgeon is the only one who can assess you and devise a plan that fits your expectations and budget. Best of luck!
