Muscle plication is a normal part of any tummy tuck done on patients who have had children. Swelling occurs after any surgery, it is only a clinical problem if it is allowed to accumulate. Sutures can be placed at the time of surgery that will eliminate the space where fluid would accumulate making the drains unnecessary. I have not used a drain tube for a tummy tuck procedure in more than 7 years. Aside from being a painful nuisance, drain tubes can be a source of infection and swelling can accumulate after the drains are removed.

I allow all of my Tummy Tuck, Breast Lift, Breast Augment and Liposuction patients to shower the day after surgery. The bacterial count of clean tap water is much lower than that found on your skin and you will cause no harm by showering after any of these procedures. I do not however allow my patients to swim or use hot tubs for two weeks after surgery.

The risk of anesthesia in an otherwise healthy 30 year old female is very low but not zero. You can keep this risk at a minimum by not trying to accomplish to much on one day. I would not schedule a patient for outpatient cosmetic procedures lasting more than four hours, and so I suggest that you plan to do these procedures on two different days.

Do not use non steroidal anti inflammatory medications such as Advil, Al eve, Naprosyn, Motrin, or Ibuprofen for 2 weeks after surgery. All of these will increase your risk for bleeding and they will not decrease swelling. Tylenol is safe to take. Do not take Tylenol in addition to your prescription pain pills as many of these contain Tylenol as well.

We routinely do mommy makeovers as out patient procedures. We see patients in our office the morning after surgery and the following week. You will need someone to not only take over your responsibilities at home but also to look after you. Do as much in advance at home to prepare (shopping, laundry, meal preparation etc) and give yourself a chance to recover.

Staying overnight is always a possibility, but it is expensive, and not medically necessary.
