Good morning,

Given that you have persistent swelling after your reconstruction, I would recommend you be evaluated in person by a plastic surgeon. I do have patients who are unhappy to have a reconstruction with implants under the muscle who are able to change that to a different kind of reconstruction. Some options include moving the implants above the muscle or switching to a different kind of reconstruction like a DIEP flap which uses your abdominal tissue to make a new breast.

Breast reconstruction should always be creative since we have so many options available. We are able to take tissue from your abdomen, back or other areas of your body to create a natural, soft breast. A newer development is being able to attach the nerve from that tissue to the nerve in your chest to return sensation to your breast after mastectomy surgery.

Does Breast Reconstruction DIEP Flap procedure result in loss of body weight?

A DIEP flap procedure involves moving the skin and fat from the stomach and using that to create new breasts. It will not result in weight loss because the tissue is being saved – moved to create new breasts. However, your body will look as though you had an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck.

Thank you for your question.  Part of a preoperative physical exam would be a breast examination, when the plastic surgeon should examine your breasts for any “palpable” (able to feel) lumps.  He or she should also ask about any personal or family history of breast problems or cancer.  If you fit criteria, you would also get a mammogram prior to surgery (certainly everyone over 40 would get it; some younger that 40 would also depending on their history).  So!  there shouldn’t be any surp…

Thanks for your question.  In general, breast implants for augmentation are placed either above or below the muscle.  Also, what do you mean by “extremely physical”?  Are you just standing for long periods of time?  Are you lifting heavy things?  I think a good rule of thumb is at least one week off from work in either case.  If under the muscle, no heavy lifting (greater than 15 lbs) for 2-3 weeks.  Regardless of the type of surgery, most people feel very tired in the 1-2 weeks after a proc…
